Anti-inflammatory & Analgesic properties of the Avocado Leaf

Pain is a common symptom of various diseases, and it can be treated with analgesics such as aspirin. However, aspirin has many side effects (1). Therefore, it is important to find new analgesic drugs that are less harmful to the body. In recent research, scientists evaluated the analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities of the aqueous extract of leaves of Persea americana mill (Lauraceae).

Persea americana Mill (Lauraceae) is a small tropical tree native to America, which belongs to the family Lauraceae. The leaves of this plant have shown analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity in several studies. However, there is no information on its bioactive compounds, nor their potential mechanisms of action.

Analgesia is one of the most important applications of medicinal plants due to its efficacy and safety. It is well known that inflammation is a common phenomenon in many diseases, and it is considered a sign or symptom of these diseases.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities of Persea americana in vivo.

Materials and Methods

In order to determine the analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities of Persea americana, researchers conducted a study with mice. They administered varying amounts of the aqueous extract of leaves of P. americana to mice and observed the effects on pain thresholds and inflammation.

The researchers found that doses of extract ranging from 100 mg/kg to 300 mg/kg produced a dose-dependent inhibition of both phases of the formalin pain test in mice, a reduction in mouse writhing induced by acetic acid, and an elevation of pain threshold in the hot plate test in mice. The extract also produced a dose-dependent inhibition of carrageenan-induced rat paw edema. The results obtained indicate that the extract possesses analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects.

Results and Discussion

This study proves the analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities of Persea americana mill (Lauraceae). The objective of this study was to evaluate the analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities of the aqueous extract of leaves of Persea americana mill. The analgesic activity was determined in mice models using acetic acid-induced writhing, formalin test, and hot plate method.

Hydroalcoholic leaf extract of Persea americana mill (Lauraceae) was shown to have anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, and analgesic properties at the levels studied, giving credibility to the plant's historic usage in the treatment of inflammatory and painful disorders.

Takeaway: The liquid extract of avocado leaf may be very helpful in treating pain.

The study was done on the analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities of Persea americana mill (Avocaod Leaf) to prove that it is a promising plant for the treatment of pain.

A variety of phytochemicals have been reported to possess analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities. The current study was therefore carried out to investigate the analgesic and anti-inflammatory mechanisms of Persea americana mill (Avocado Leaf).

The results showed that this plant had significant analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities after treatment.
